The Docks project (Autumn 2006)

Brief: To find out what interests us and what areas/ techniques we want to work with in the future. Everyone in the class were researching the same area; the Galway docklands, for the duration of the autumn term. The first few weeks we were doing research consisting of photos, sketches, collected objects etc. We then processed the research through two stages and had workshops covering different techniques. During the final weeks we made paintings or installations that were to be our finished pieces, of which some were picked by our Head of Department for an exhibition downstairs in the college before Christmas. My two paintings called "Mirrored tanks 1 and 2" were picked for the exhibition.

During this project I was concerned with how colours and different materials work together and I studied colour theory. I used a technique of transfering the ink from photocopies onto acrylic gel medium and I also learnt to do screenprinting. I was interested in the cityscape down by the docks, dominated by a number of large oil tanks, which are due to be removed from the site as they are too close to the city.

Year 2 (2005-2006):

Self project (Mar/May '06)

Brief: To think about who we are and what we're interested in. What type of art am I interested in, what artists influence me? We started off by doing research and collecting things that we like. I brought in 60's/70's interior pictures, photographed my clothes, brought in a fern plant to symbolise the forest which is a big part if my heritage, coming from Sweden and growing up out the country surrounded by forest. I collected colour samples and photos of things that were part of my personality, what I'm made up of and what I like. I brought music that I like and researched artists such as Peter Doig and Stephen Loughman.

When I started making pictures I choose to focus on the forest, how it is significant to me, but at the same time bringing in elements that I like in funky clothing, strong colours and flatness of paint application.

Body project (Jan/Mar '06)

Brief: To consider the role of the body in painting. This includes: the body painted - figuration and narrative, the body as a subject. How the painting is constructed to convey a figure in a certain context. The body as painter - e.g action painting. The body as viewer - Relation of the audience to the art object. We had a number of workshops in drawing, performance, process painting etc.

I took a series of photos of myself covering up my face and then I worked with the notion of shying away from the gaze or the lens. Flaws of our bodies that we try to hide and being uncomfortable when people are looking at you. I made paintings based on the photos as well as Photoshop collages.

Place project (Nov/Dec '05):

Brief: We were asked to pick a location, preferably close to the college where we could work for the duration of the period. I picked the edge of Loch Atalia, where a new cinema complex had just been built and they were applying the finishing touches to a 5 star hotel. I liked the modern architecture and the clash between the muddy beach and the bright colours of the buildings.

In the brief it said that we should cover all aspects of the place through photographs, sketches, collecting found objects etc. and then make artworks based on our research.
